Meet Our Team

Founder Lilias Ahmeira

Lilias has run clinics for people with neurological disorders for over ten years and spoken at international conferences on Autism, she is also the mother of three boys, one being autistic.

Her refusal to conform to the labels put on 'special' children and the lessons she has learnt from her own life experience, means she brings a fresh approach to many parents who are at the end of their tether.

She tells it like it is, and understands that many children are capable of a lot more than they are given credit for whilst undertanding the utter desperation felt by many parents. Her passion is to create the right space to allow change to occur. Children learn new boundaries and experiences whilst having fun and parents are "held".

Lilias has many years of equine experience and is very excited to be combining her skills in this unique venture.

Adam Nye is Lilias'  life partner who works hard on the property maintenance side whenever he has the time and loves to help with the special children as well.

Lilias says: " Adam is my soul mate, the softest, and most generous tough guy I know, who can fix anything.  When he's not running an oil rig he works tirelessly behind the scenes to pull off minor miracles here at Scrapton".

She is the first point of contact for bookings, helps out when the families arrive, and loves working at Special Horses so much she never looks at the clock except to check when a familiy is due. Her husband Mick and sons Sam and Lewi all come and help whenever they can.

Her comment: "We've seen what goes on between the horses and the children, the whole place is built on love,it's a family."
Jo Bluck

Jo works part time with us,spending the rest of the time at her own livery hunting yard, the kids love her and she is another valuable member of the team.

She is from a hunting background and has been riding since childhood; working her way up through pony club, breaking and riding her own horses.

Dr.Mark Hulland- Chair of trustees

Desi recently moved to Chard after 40+ years with horses and dogs in very rural Mid Devon. She was also a trustee of a local charity providing out of school activities for children with special needs. When she heard about Special Horses for Special Children she knew she had to find out more and after a visit to the yard, offered her services.

Jackie Jones-Trustee

Jackie is mother to two grown boys and her husband, Kevin runs a microbrewery in Stocklinch. He also has a band called Four Men On The Job, which hope to support the team!

When not supporting them at gigs, Jackie enjoys hacking her chunky Cob Dids and she also owns two mischievous Dartmoor ponies which she bought as foals. Like Claire, she is an exponent of the “Join Up” methodology for working effectively with horses and hopes her approach will work equally well in the world of fundraising!

Jackie has HR experience and currently works for St Margaret's Hospice.

Jeremy Blair

Jeremy is a marvel behind the scenes. Brilliant in the kitchen, he can   turn his hands to most things.  He smoothes the waters and calms things when we are stretched.  But above all, he is fantastic at looking after little people, especially Lilias' three lads.

The dogs are also an important part of the yard and Boots is Jeremy's best buddy.

Meet Our Very Special Horses:

Storm

Is a magnificent looking black Andalusian gelding 15.2

who is a real gentleman with a very calm temperament.

He loves attention, and will do shoulder in, leg yielding, Spanish Walk,

Reverence, pedestal work and is currently perfecting his smile.

Liderc

A hungarian nonius who was bought from Giffords circus.  I think this horse is more human than horse.

Just loves human company, is so gentle.

Reasonably new to the yard, he is gently being introduced to our ways and has already proven himself to be a very valuable asset.

Casper

Is an extremely inquisitive 12.2 dark bay pony who will always offer an expressive Spanish Walk,

who very gently builds confidence in little people who are just a bit unsure.

He gently nuzzles and tries to be everyone’s friend and confidant.

Mabon

This fellow should perhaps be renamed “cheeky chops” and loves to play with things in his mouth and will keep you entertained if you give him the slightest hint you are paying him any attention at all. He is a 14.2 bay Welsh Cob.  Playing to his strengths he is currently learning to pick things up in his mouth, he Spanish Walk’s, loves to get on a Pedestal and Bows deeply.

Elfin,Maestro and Peaches

These are our three miniature shetlands, who melt the hearts of all our little clients and quell the fears of our larger ones too.  They lead onto pedestals, get groomed, painted, covered in pipe cleaners, are happy when lying down to chat to little clients.  Huge confidence boosters, we love these ponies!

The babies, Peaches and Maestro

Leo

Leo is  kindly on loan from our very special hay provider Don Biss .  An ex racehorse turned team chaser with an incredibly laid back attitude to life.  He is now embarking on his third career and is currently being reschooled to do double riding and is already being used for therapy and sensory work, and to lead mini jockeys on, for those who enjoy heights and the need for speed!

Pingu

Every small child's best friend, extremely naughty, inquisitive, clever, witty and just adorable.

Mr BlueMr Blue

Our gorgeous Mr Blue is there to delight children who prefer something a little smaller, happy to be lead around, pop onto pedestals, be groomed, painted and generally fussed over.  In the field he likes nothing better than to tease the bigger horses by nipping the backs of the knees and racing off.  A very loveable pony who captures the hearts of so many children,he has even had a little persons picnic on his back.
